2014's John Wick put
Keanu Reeves back on the map of leading action men. The straightforward but
well executed story, stylish look, and kick-ass action sequences made of the
low-budget movie a surefire hit at the box-office. However, the actor, who
knows a thing or two about franchises and how quickly they can stray from the
original idea and delve into mediocrity, reveals that he didn't immediately
jump on the opportunity to make a sequel, opting instead to wait until the
script for the sequel could live up to the first movie and surpass it.
"For us it was
just what is the next chapter? What is the continuation of this story?"
Reeves explains. "Opening up the world – the underground world. The world
behind the world in terms of the assassins. Kind of evolving the action – if
the first one was a black belt, then this one is third degree black belt. It’s such a fun project and a great character."

In John Wick: Chapter
2, Reeves is joined by fellow Matrix co-star Laurence Fishburne, who has "this
fantastic role as a character in the Underworld called The Bowery King" the
actor reveals. "He plays such a great character in the piece and he brings
of course humour, intelligence, charisma and fascination – he’s such an
incredible actor and it was a pleasure to work with him again."
Also joining the
franchise is another of Reeves' former co-stars, this time of Constantine. Peter
Stormare "has more of a cameo in it but
again he brings such fun and mystery and this mixture of groundedness and the
surreal," Reeves' says.
John Wick: Chapter 2 opens in
theaters on February 10, 2017.
