The Walt Disney
Studios is getting ready to move forward with an addition to their Snow White
heritage with a live-action movie centered on her sister Red Rose.
The character first
appeared in one of Grimm's fairy tales with no relation to the better-known Snow
White and the Seven Dwarves story, let alone the classic Disney movie.
Written by Justin
Merz and pitched by Evan Daugherty, Red Rose was initially written as a "simple" feature before Daugherty rearranged it to make the story closer to the Disney movie,
giving the animation a "companion piece" feel.
The retrofit story turns
Red Rose into a key element towards the latter moments of the classic Snow
White story, specifically after she takes a bite of the poison apple. Rose then
has to go on an dangerous quest with Grumpy to break Snow White's curse and
bring her back to life.
Daugherty is no
stranger to the Snow White story. The screenwriter previously wrote the action
fantasy Snow White and the Huntsman for Universal starring Kristen Stewart and
Chris Hemsworth.
