It may
have been pushed back for a few months from its original release date, but production
has officially begun on Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII.
During an
earning call with investors, Disney's CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Johnson has started
filming Episode VIII. Where he didn't specify, but we assume at the Pinewood
Studios.
Johnson
actually filmed a few scenes for Episode VIII last fall at the Skellig
Michael Island, the location J.J. Abrams used to unite Rey (Daisy Ridley) with
Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) at the end of The Force Awakens. How much was
filmed is unknown, but it was probably just so visually both the end of The
Force Awakens and the beginning of the yet untitled Episode VIII mesh.
"There is no better way to propel this franchise into
the future than producing quality products. Filming of Star
Wars: Episode VIII, the next chapter of the legendary saga, has
just commenced and it will be in theaters December 2017. And production of Episode IX, a 2019
release, has also begun."
Colin Trevorrow is still a long way from actually
start filming Episode IX, so it's unclear what Iger means with - "Episode IX, a 2019
release, has also begun." - but let's assume he misspoke and what he
actually meant to say was that concept art, planning, and pre-visualizations
have begun.
Iger also complimented Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A
Star Wars Story saying that they "love" what they have seen so far,
and revealed that filming is "virtually completed."
As for the yet untitled Star Wars
spinoff centered on a young Han Solo, the Disney CEO also revealed that director's
Chris Miller and Phil Lord are currently in pre-production.
Confirmed
so far for Episode VIII are Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Adam
Driver, Gwendoline Christy, and Anthony Daniels, but I think it is safe to
assume that Carrie Fisher, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, and Domhnall Gleeson will
also reprise their roles.
As for
Benicio Del Toro and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to confirm
their casting, however now that production has officially begun we should be
hearing something soon.
