Johnny
Depp has signed on to star in The Invisible Man for Universal Pictures. The
project is part of the classic movie monster universe Alex Kurtzman and Chris
Morgan are developing for the studio, which includes The Mummy, The Bride of
Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Dracula, and the Creature From The Black Lagoon to
name only a few.
Based
on the H.G. Wells novel of the same name, The Invisible Man follows a scientist
who finds a way to become invisible, losing his sanity in the process.
With
every other studio reaping the benefits of a shared universe, the classic movie
monster franchise has become a big priority for Universal's Donna Langley, who
with Depp manages to grab hold of two big Hollywood names, with the second
being Tom Cruise who is set to star in The Mummy, which Kurtzman will direct
for a June 9, 2017 release.
The
Invisible Man is an intriguing choice for Depp, who is perhaps best known for
using makeup and prosthetics effects as a means to enhance his trademark facial
acting, so I will be interest to see what he does when he becomes invisible or
is wrapped in bandages.
Depp
made a return to a more traditional and subdued style of acting in Black Mass, but
his next couple of projects, Alice Through The Looking Glass and Pirates of the
Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, mark a return to more extravagant
characters.
