The nominations are
in for the Visual Effects category of the 88th Academy Awards, and there aren't
many surprises. Disney managed to get four nominations, two for the Marvel
superhero movies Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron, one for Lucasfilm's Star
Wars: The Force Awakens, and another for Brad Bird's unremarkable Tomorrowland.
Also in the race is
the biggest movie of the year thus far, Jurassic World, two of the most vertigo
inducing movies in recent years, Everest and The Walk, Steven Spielberg's cold
war drama Bridge of Spies, the analogy wrapped in a package of obviousness,
Chappie, the box office surprise of the year, Furious Seven, the small but full
of well realized big ideas, Ex Machina, the final entry of a franchise, The
Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and many, many more.
