After
creatively killing the franchise with A Good Day to Die Hard, it sounds like
Fox is trying to reboot the character with a half prequel, described as "Die
Hard Year One", which they hope will be directed by Len Wiseman, who directed
the fourth installment of the franchise, Live Free Or Die Harder.
Negotiations
are still in its early stages, but Deadline reports that Wiseman and producer Lorenzo
di Bonaventura are looking to get a writer to help reinvent the franchise by setting
it in "1979,
when McClane was a cop in gritty New York City and showing how he became a die
hard kind of guy."
Bruce Willis is
expected to reprise his iconic role, thought it's unclear how, Deadline says he
will bookend the movie, but having him just pop up at the end seems strange,
otherwise why go to all the trouble of a prequel, which could be the perfect
opportunity to revitalize the franchise with a new actor?
Maybe the movie will
be a flashback to his younger self, or maybe McClane stumbles into a terrorist
plot involving a time machine, who knows. But what is clear is that Willis has
been kept in the loop despite not having signed a deal yet.
