It seems that
Paramount Pictures has decided to scrap their plans for a sequel to Hansel
& Gretel: Witch Hunters starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, and will
now proceed with a TV show instead, which according to Deadline will likely end-up
on Paramount TV.
The domestic box
office of the first movie only just covered the production expenses, while internationally
the movie managed to become a hit, making $170 million on its $50 million
budget.
Although unexpected
considering the total box office gross of $225 million, the move doesn't come
as a total surprise since this is the second time the studio decided to move
one of their big screen properties to TV. Paramount recently inked a deal with Amazon
for a Jack Ryan series being done by Carlton Cuse and Michael Bay's Platinum
Dunes. However, who apparently was surprised was Bruno Aveillan, the director
Paramount had set-up to helm the sequel, who it seems wasn't noticed of the
change.
It's unclear whether
Renner or Arterton will reprise their roles in the TV adaptation, but I have my
doubts.
