Last June we reported
that Kenneth Branagh had signed on to direct the newest adaptation of Agatha
Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. Though intriguing, picking such a
small project seemed strange considering the actor/director had just come from
a big hit, Disney's Cinderella.
Well, according to
Variety and The Tracking Board, Branagh has signed on to develop and direct the
feature film adaptation of Eoin Colfer series of young-adult novels, Artemis
Fowl, with playwright Conor McPherson in talks to write the script.

The project has been
in development at Disney for a few years, and back in 2013, the studio sent out
a press release announcing that Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order
of the Phoenix) had been tapped to pen the screenplay for the adaptation, which
would focus on the first two books in the 8-book series. It's unclear what
happened between Goldenberg and Disney and if a script was even written.
Branagh is still
attached to direct Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, which he
might due while McPherson writes what I assume will be the beginning of a new
franchise for Disney.
