Remember
the Star Wars Anthology that was going to be directed Josh Trank and
written/produced by Simon Kinberg? Well Lucasfilm has pushed the project from
its original 2017 release date all the way to 2020, after Episode IX comes out in 2019.
The
reason? Well, probably has to do with the search for a new director. If you
don't know, the short story is that last June, just as production on the Fantastic
Four was about to commence, Lucasfilm announced they had picked Trank to helm
the second Star Wars Anthology. However, we knew that something was up when
just months later he failed to appear alongside Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One
director Gareth Edwards at Star Wars Celebration, which wouldn't have been an
issue had not rumors of his behavior on the set of Fantastic Four had by that
time spread across every single site dedicated to entertainment news. Well we
got our confirmation shortly, when it was announced that he would no longer be
in charge of the spinoff.
Now,
EW reveals that Lucasfilm has decided to pull the project from its original
release date. In addition, Lucasfilm President and producer
Kathleen Kennedy says that the change of dates doesn't affect the studio's plans too
much.
"It’s still one
of the stories that we absolutely want to tell," she says. "There is
a lot of innovative technology in and around what it is we’re doing with that
story, so for a lot of reasons, we were comfortable postponing that. But we’re
definitely still developing it… We’re trying to get to a point where we’re
never rushing for anything."
Furthermore, it seems
that the initial plan for Star
Wars Celebration was to have Trank show up and unveil a teaser reel just like
Edwards did for Rogue One.
At
the very least, it is good to hear they are taking their time with the film,
which was rumored to be about Boba Fett.
