The
Bourne franchise stands as one of my favorite of all time, but for a new installment
to be made, especially one that sees the return of Matt Damon to the character,
something's have to change. The world we now live in is not the same it was when
the first film open in theaters. It has changed, and it appears that the
franchise will change as a result.
Speaking
to Buzzfeed, Matt Damon says that both he and director Paul Greengrass came up
with the idea for the Bourne film after the NSA whistleblowing scandal and Edward
Snowden. "Without giving
too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a
post-Snowden world," Damon said. "It seems like enough has changed,
you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil
liberties and the nature of democracy."
As for where the new
film will take the character, Damon says that they are "starting in
Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy," he said — also a nod to the
country’s current financial crisis that is plaguing the greater European
economy. "And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation
of…."
We'll have to wait to
see if the new film will give origin to a new trilogy or not, and if Universal
Pictures will try to tie-in and further develop The Bourne Legacy's Aaron Cross
(Jeremy Renner) character.
Opening on July 29,
2016, the yet untitled Bourne sequel also stars Alicia Vikander, Julia Stiles,
and Tommy Lee Jones.
