Yes, you read that
right. Sony Pictures Animation has paid seven-figures for a movie pitch that centers
on winky faces, smiley faces, turds with eyes, and so on. Now if you're
thinking who would pay for an Emoji movie, then you should probably know that
Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures were also biding for the property. Who knew
that Emojis were so popular among the studios?
Men At Work producer
Eric Siegel will write the script for Anthony Leondis (Kung Fu Panda: Secrets
of the Masters) direct. Leondis recently directed B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly
Operations for DreamWorks Animation, but due to restructures at the company, the film is currently sitting on a shelves waiting for a release date.
Although the idea of
a movie featuring 2D yellow faces sounds ridiculous, let's not forget that when
The Lego Movie was announced many nod their heads in disbelief that a major
motion picture would rather finance a "toy commercial" than an
actual film. Well, The Lego Movie was one of the great animated films of 2014, so who's to say that this one won't be the same.
Sony will probably
move fast on the script, as it seems that another similar project will be put
on the market shortly.
