Move aside Disney,
Warner Bros. has Paul Thomas Anderson writing and hopefully directing a
live-action adaptation of Pinocchio starring Robert Downey Jr. as Geppetto.
Though a live-action
children's story seems strange for Anderson, it is the perfect opportunity for
the writer/director to work with Downey, whom the filmmaker is good friends
with and has wanted to work with for a while. In fact, the actor was supposed
to have starred in the PTA's Inherent Vice, but his duties with Avengers:
Age of Ultron prohibited him, and the role ended up going to Joaquin Phoenix.
Downey has been
working on the script for a live-action Pinocchio for a few years, with the
latest draft coming from The Giver writer, Michael Mitnick.
With movies like Tim
Burton's Alice in Wonderland, or the Angelina Jolie starring vehicle Maleficent
ranking high in the top grossing movies of their particular years, every other
studios has made live-action children movies their top priority.
Disney has an immense
list of films coming up with Bill Condon's Beauty and the Beast starring Emma
Watson, and Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book closest to coming out. Besides
Pinocchio, Warner also has Andy Serkis live-action/CGI Jungle Book with
Benedict Cumberbatch, Christian Bale, and Cate Blanchet starring. While
Universal has plans for a The Little Mermaid film, and a Dumbo adaptation to be
directed by Tim Burton.
