Mojang has officially announced on their site that It's Always Sunny In
Philadelphia co-creator, writer, director, and star Rob McElhenney has been
brought in to helm the adaptation of the widely popular video game to the big
screen.
Minecraft is a creator's game in which the player builds anything they want
out of cubes, and then either defend it from creatures of the night, or just
build, build, build without risk of destruction.
The last time I heard anything from the movie was last year and Shawn Levy had
become attached to direct. Obviously, this is no longer the case.
Like Lego, or the recently announced emoji movie, Minecraft doesn't come
with a story, so it can be anything.
A few months back Legendary acquired McElhenney's pitch to write and direct
a family action film titled Figment, so it's unclear which of the projects will
move first, but Warner Bros. must be keen to have the video game adaptation move
forward as soon as possible.
On other fronts, McElhenney is still co in charge of FXX's It's Always
Sunny In Philadelphia, which was recently picked up for a eleventh and twelfth
seasons.
