After Alice in
Wonderland, and Maleficent, Disney realized the huge potential in re-adapting former
feature film animations, so it's not really a surprise to hear that they have decided
to add yet another one to their increasingly populated slate of live-action reboots
or adaptations of some of their most iconic animated films.
Per THR, Disney has
tapped Damien Shannon, and Mark Swift to write the script for Genies, which
Tripp Vinson (San Andreas) will produce. A prequel to Aladdin, Genies is a comedy adventure that will tell
the story of the blue genie before he ever met Aladdin.
It's interesting that
Disney has decided to go with these relative newcomers to write a Genie
live-action film, and not necessarily because of their "green"
status. Shannon and Swift short body of work doesn't scream Disney, it screams
instead Freddy Vs. Jason, and the Friday the 13th remake, so I'm wondering what
kind of pitch both made for Disney to say yes. I'm also interested in seeing
who will be brave enough to step into Robin Williams shoes, who so
fantastically and iconically voiced the character in the 1992 animated
film.
So far Disney has planned The
Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Tinker
Bell, Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh, and Fantasia‘s Night
on Bald Mountain films, as well
as sequels to Alice in Wonderland, and Maleficent.
