Jason has his Hockey Mask, Michael Myers has his
William Shatner mask, and several serial killers had their Ghostface
mask. Unfortunately, unlike the previous two killers, Ghostface's face has literally became a parody of what a terrifying character should look like.
The moment the first Scary Movie came out, old Ghostface
lost the thing that made him such a terrifying character for jumpy teens in the
90's, his face. So now, decades later, and before viewers of a certain age start
going wazzaap! at the upcoming MTV series, something had to be done.
Entertainment Weekly has released a first look at the
new Ghostface, which "evokes some of the
Jason hockey mask and the white Michael Myers mask, but it’s still first and
foremost evocative of the Scream mask. It’s sort of a reinvention while also
paying homage," said executive producer Jaime Paglia.
Scream creator, Wes Craven also had some words to say about the new mask, which according to him "is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction. It also ties into the story, which I won’t give away."
While Paglia adds that "the [original] mask is so iconic. If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience."
Premiering on June 30th, Scream stars Bella Thorne, Jason Wiles, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Willa Fitzgerald, Carlson Young, Amadeus Serafini, John Karna, and Connor Weil.
