A small accusation is
all the brilliant writer/director Alejandro Amenábar needs to slowly start to peel
away a bigger mystery that no one would have foreseen in his upcoming horror/thriller,
Regression.
Starring Emma Watson
as Angela, a young woman that accuses her father (David Dencik) of unspeakable
acts, and Ethan Hawke as the detective that tries to solve the case. Regression
seems so far to be my kind of horror film, with less jump scares and more tension
derived from a well crafted script.
I've been an Amenábar
fan ever since Tesis, and I've been following his
work since. Abre Los Ojos, The Others, Mar Adentro, and Agora are a must
see, and I'm crossing my fingers the filmmaker's subtlety for the genre, which
he showed in the underrated The Others, can be seen in Regression.
Regression opens on
August 28th, and also stars David Thewlis, Dale Dickey, Devon Bostick, and
Lothaire Bluteau.
Minnesota, 1990.
Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) investigates the case of young Angela
(Emma Watson), who accuses her father, John Gray (David Dencik), of an
unspeakable crime. When John unexpectedly and without recollection admits
guilt, renowned psychologist Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) is brought in to help
him relive his memories and what they discover unmasks a horrifying nationwide
mystery.
