Now that Marvel and
Sony have finally reached an agreement about the future of Spider-Man, where
does the character fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
The press release sent
out by Marvel revealed that the next installment of the Spider-Man franchise
will go out on July 28, 2017, but not before, he makes his MCU debut in one of
three upcoming Marvel films. I'm saying three because it's highly unlikely that
Spider-Man could swing by Avengers: Age of Ultron so late in the game, which then
leaves Captain America: Civil War (5/6/16), Doctor Strange (11/4/16), and Guardians
of the Galaxy 2 (5/5/17).
Of the three films, the
sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy looks like the less obvious vehicle for
Spider-Man to make his debut, as does Dr. Strange, who despite being a
long-time friend and allied of Spider-Man, is probably going to be an origin
story starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the main role. This then leaves the more
obvious choice, that many consider the right one, Captain America: Civil War.
According to The Wall
Street Journal, they have been informed that Captain America: Civil War will
indeed be the stage in which to introduce Spider-Man, which we are all assuming
will be played by a different actor since Andrew Garfield's name was left out
of the press release.
"The two
companies said late Monday that Spider-Man will appear in an upcoming
Disney-produced Marvel super-heroes movie; that movie is 2016’s "Captain
America: Civil War," according to a person with knowledge of the matter."
Spider-Man played an
important role in the Civil War storyline from the comics, but it's highly
doubtful that like in the comics he will remove his mask and reveal to the World
that he is Peter Parker.
