Guillermo del Toro wears many hats. Writer, producer, director, creative
consultant, special effects artist, for tv, comics, movies, video games, books.
While promoting The Book of Life, which he produced, del Toro was asked
about the current status of the sequel to Pacific Rim.
"We got the first draft of the movie now, and we are going to spend
another four or five months on the screenplay before we start pre-production.
We start pre-production next year in August/September and start shooting
November/December next year.
The direction we are going is very different from the first. All I can say
is that some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because
we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we
have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping
that it will ramp up on the third one.”
Pacific Rim was saved from being a flop thanks to the international
markets, where it more than tripled the North-American box-office, so it will
be interesting to see how much ambition will Legendary let him have. I'm also
curious to see how Pacific Rim 2 will set up things for a third entry in the
franchise. I just hope it isn't Hellboy 3 all over again.
