It's
official the world has ended, Soffia Coppola is in talks to helm the
live action adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale The
Little Mermaid. The tentpole project is flying or swimming under
Universal Pictures and Working Title's wing or fin. The big live
action adaptation has been in the works for years with director Joe
Wright and screenwriter Kelly Marcel working on it but since then,
the director has moved to other classics, Pan, and the screenwriter
to other adaptations, Fifty Shades of Grey.
News
comes via Deadline who also reports that scribe Caroline Thompson
(Edward Scissorhands) is currently rewriting the script.
I
don't think I need to explain what The Little Mermaid is about but
why not. The story revolves around a mermaid that makes a bargain
with a witch in order to be able to live on land so she can get
closer to a handsome prince. Perhaps the most famous version of this
story came 1989 with Disney's diluted and kid friendly version.
As
I said in the opening this big tentpole project doesn't seem to be up
Coppola's way, which is made more apparent as THR says that film will
be “kid friendly” and that it is being developed as a
four-quadrant film, so not at all what you would be expecting from
director Sofia Coppola, who tends to do more intimate movies.
