Don’t know if this is good news
or bad news, but here it goes. 20th Century Fox Animation and Blue
Sky Studios are teaming up to do a 3D CGI Peanuts movie to come out on November
2015. The movie will be the first feature film adaptation since 1980, but will
fans embrace the project? Apparently yes, since according to Craig Schulz, son
of the late creator of the Peanuts Charles M. Schulz, “It’s long overdue. The fans have been asking for a long time,
but we held off until the time was right.”
Craig and son Bryan Schulz
together with Paul Feige (The Heat), Michael J. Travers (Epic), and Cornelius
Uliano are producing. Steve Martino (Ice
Age: Continental Drift) will direct from a script written by Craig Schulz,
Bryan Schulz, and Uliano.
In an interview to USA Today,
Craig Schulz hopes to put any doubts (mine) aside as he believes that this is
the right time to make a movie:
“I’m way more protective than my father would
have been. Our No. 1 goal was always to
be authentic to his work and legacy.”
Regarding the plot, Schulz was conservative
with his words and said:
“It’s about a round-headed kid
and his dog, and that’s about as far as I’m willing to go.”
So not much, but a few details
have in the meantime surfaced:
- Charlie Brown’s lifelong crush the “Little Red-Haired Girl” will make an appearance.
- Martino says the detailed animation will show that “Snoopy has soft-white fur.”
- “We’re going to fly with Snoopy in his fantasy world. We have a bigger canvas. Bill Melendez got Snoopy off the ground in the TV specials. We’re going to take it a step further.” –Martino
As for changing from the
traditional pen and ink to the world of computer generated images, Schulz
believes that his father would have “embraced the technology” and:
“It would have been absolutely
logical for him to have come onboard.
And it brings you closer into the comic strip.”
Feige, who is co-producing says
that everyone involved in the productions wants to remain true to the “sweet
optimism” of the original material, and promises that:
“Snoopy will not be rapping, no
one will be twerking, we’re in good hands.”
I’m still not convinced and and if
this movie turns out to be crap, it will ruin the childhood memories of many,
just saying.
Peanuts opens on November 6th,
2015.
