The Akira live action has been
stuck in development for years now, but it seems that the thought of adapting
the cult manga/anime into a live action movie hasn’t float away from director
Jaume Collet-Serra’s mind. Two years ago the director was developing the
project but when Warner Bros. deemed that having a budget of $ 90 million was
too much they ordered the script to be re-written, so Serra jumped off to do
other things and the project seemed to have been forgotten. Well that was two
years ago and this past August, word got out that the director was once again
on board to direct the pic.
While talking to Collider about
his latest film, Non-Stop, the director made an aside:
“I’m focusing on Akira though.”
As a matter of fact the director
pointed out that it might be his next film:
“So hopefully that’s the next
one.”
The main reason as to why I haven’t
yet seen an Akira live action movie was because of the budget, which went from being
$180 million, to $90 million and now should be, if Warner has had its way,
between $60 million and $70 million. In the interview Serra didn’t specify if
the budget issue had been resolved or if after all this time Warner gave in and
gave an ok to the $90 million mark.
“I’ve done two movies since I put
this little pause on that project … but now powers that be are interested.”
Finally Serra was asked if there
was a specific part of production that he thought was going to be more costly.
“No, it’s an overall conceptual
thing. You know, it’s how big the movie should be, you know, for the complexity
of the concept.”
What remains to be seen is how
will the adaptation of such a fan favorite will go, since the story must be
quite tricky to adapt to live action and how will the director be able to give
us the big and intricate world of Akira with such a small budget. What do you
think?
