Director Bong Joon-ho’s
Snowpiercer saga seems to be coming to an end. After months and months of behind
the scenes negotiations between the director and producer Harvey Weinstein
regarding which cut of the movie would be released in the U.S., Joon-ho’s
original cut or Weinstein’s more action heavier cut, it seems that both parties
have come to an agreement, even if a slightly crooked one.
This all began because Hervey Weinstein,
who seems to like creating these types of problems, like Grace of Monaco for
instance, thought that the original movie, which was a smashing hit in South
Korea, was too long at “just beyond two and one-half hours” and might alienate American
audiences. I think Mr. Weinstein should go to the movies more often and maybe
he will find out that there are/were very long and successful movie that went
well above what he considers to be a long movie, like for instance James
Cameron’s Avatar at just 2 hours and 42 minutes.
At this point the compromise is
that the original cut will be released in the U.S. with none of Weinstein’s “improvements”,
but only in a small number of theaters with the potential to go national if the
movie does well at the box-office, so please go and see it and show producers
that sometimes they don’t know everything.
I can’t attest to the quality of
the movie but if it sticks to the source material, which I must admit I’ve only
read the first chapter, it will a great thing to behold, even at 2:30 hours.
