Marvel and Netflix announced earlier last month that they would be adapting four superhero titles to the small screen, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Daredevil.
We already posted the brief history of Iron Fist (here)
and now it’s time for his partner in Heroes for Hire Luke Cage. Our next bio
will be a continuation of Luke Cage’s life with Jessica Jones.
The character history is at its purest, since there
are more arcs and stories in the character’s comic book run.
Born and raised in Harlem, Carl Lucas was a petty
criminal that belong in a gang, who had thoughts of becoming New York’s biggest
racketeer until one day he realizes that his actions were hurting his family
and went “straight”, finding a legitimate employment.
While still at the gang Lucas befriended Willis
Stryker who was also a petty criminal, and while Lucas left the gang, Stryker
remained and rose through the ranks, but the two remained friends. One day
Stryker’s girlfriend afraid of her boyfriend’s violent work left him and found
help in Lucas. Infuriated and convinced that Lucas was the reason of the
breakup, Stryker planted heroin in Lucas’ apartment and tipped the police.
Lucas was arrested.
At his first prison, Stryker’s betrayal consumed Lucas
who often get involved in brawls and escape attempts. These actions transferred
him to Seagate Prison, where he meets the sadistic and violent guard Albert “Billy
Bob” Rackham and Dr. Noah Burstein, who recruited Lucas as a volunteer for an
experimental cell regeneration procedure based on the Super-Soldier serum. While
at the experiment the doctor leaves Lucas alone and Rackham took that as an
opportunity to use the experiment controls and tried to kill Lucas, resulting
in the experiment going haywire and Lucas gaining superhuman strength and
durability, which he used to escape prison.
Now back in the big city, Lucas now called Luke Cage,
he establishes an office in Times Square’s Gem Theater and launches himself in
a new career as a Hero for Hire, helping anyone who could pay his services.
Cage finds out that living in New York and being super powered comes with its
own problems, as he frequently fights villains in costume and other
superpowered foes. After fighting villains like Doctor Doom, who refused to pay
him his fees, Cage begins to fight alongside other superheroes like the
Fantastic Four or Spider-Man. At this time Cage also befriends Jessica Jones (also
on Marvel/Netflix list of upcoming series) whose super-strength and fighting
style were similar to Cage’s who now adapts the Power Man codename. Power Man
joins The Defenders but soon resigns.
Also in New York is Doctor Burstein is kidnaped by a
villain known as Bushmaster, who also as acquitting evidence of Cage’s heroin
charges. Bushmaster blackmail’s Cage into abducting detective Misty Knight, who
had humiliated him. Cage does as his told and in the process ends up fighting
Knight’s boyfriend Iron Fist, who after hearing the story helps Cage defeating
Bushmaster and rescuing his friend and evidence. After this event Cage and Iron
Fist become best friends and start working together.
After some years of on and off hero work Cage finally
decided to stay has a full fledge hero alongside his friend Iron Fist. The pair
of heroes worked many cases including as bodyguards for Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil.
One night Cage and his longtime friend Jessica Jones had
a one night stand, resulting in Jones getting pregnant. After some more
adventures both ended up living together.
