In
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Clark Gregg is reborn Agent Phil Coulson from
Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents
from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together
they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe,
protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary.
The
show was a massive hit before it even aired, which creates an expectation that
sometimes it’s hard to reach, but I would say that it was reached in a very good
and entertaining way.
The
pilot opens with a voice retelling the events that transpire in the battle of
New York, which then leads to a super powered J. August Richards saving a woman
in a bomb explosion, while being filmed by hacker Skye.
After
this we move to Paris, and see agent Ward, infiltrating and retrieving a piece
of Chitauri tech. Agent Ward then has discussion with agent Maria Hill about
what is S.H.I.E.L.D. after which he is introduced to a very much alive (welcome
to level 7) Agent Coulson, who brings the reluctant Agent Ward to the team.
After
this fast paced action and comic introduction, we are introduced to the rest of
the team in the form of Agent Malinda May (Ming-Na Wen), a vehicular specialist
and ground manager, Agent Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), the tech genius and Agent Simmons
(Elizabeth Henstridge) the biochemist.
After
all the introductions are made, we realize that the super powered J. August
Richards is in fact being powered by the Extremis technology and that the
explosion that we witness at the beginning of the show was in done by a former “patient”
and that what blew up was in fact the lab that was conducting the experiments.
J.
August Richards’ character Mike Peterson is now delusional and showing signs
that he too might blow up, but the team successfully brings that to a stop in a
fast pace action scene, after which Peterson is literally put to sleep and
carried away to an undisclosed location.
The
show ends with a funny and ominous feel as Agent Coulson tries to convince Skye
that she should work with them, before being interrupted by a call from the “bus”
saying that there is something big going on.
Coulson
and Skye then leave in Coulson’s flying car Lola.
The pilot
gives us some mysteries that grab us and makes wanting to see the next and next
and next episodes, like everyone knowing the secret of Agent Coulson’s miraculous
rebirth, but Coulson or the evil societies that are now beginning to show their
faces
The
show makes a good job of connecting this world to those of The Avengers, Thor (“I
don’t think Thor is a God.” - “Haven’t been near his arms.”), Spider-Man (“With
Great Power comes…a ton of weird crap”), Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow
and The Hulk.
The
special effects are really good.
Funny
moments, like Agent Coulson appearing out of the shadows to introduce himself
to Agent Ward and saying that according to Agent Hill, Ward is a poop in his
people skills.
We
are grabbed to the show from beginning to end, thanks to its fast pace action.
Being
too fast pace doesn’t allow much in character development, which I’m sure will
happen in future episodes, but still…
I
give the pilot a 9 out of 10
