Avid Arad Talks About The Feature Film Adaptations Of Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid And Mass Effect

If there is a development hell, these three game franchises are in it. Uncharted had director David O. Russell attached to direct and write the script and actor Mark Wahlberg to star as Nathan Drake, until it all fell apart, then about a year ago it had director Neil Burger sign on to the project but has since departure, meaning that at this point the adaptation is stuck. About Mass Effect (personal favorite), also about a year ago there were news that Morgan Davis Foehl, who as far as I can check out doesn’t have any scripts or drafts under his name was tapped in to write the adaptation of the popular game trilogy. Regarding the Metal Gear Solid adaptation, it isn’t good news, it has been stuck in development for over five years with no end in sight.

While talking to Kotaku, producer Avi Arad (Iron Man, all the Spider-Man’s, X-men and much more) said that till this point no studio has done a good adaptation of a video game, with the exception of the very successful Resident Evil franchise:

“I think that film studios are bankers and filmmakers are risk takers and somewhere in between we meet on the battlefield,” said Arad. “And the moment one video game movie goes through the roof, it’s the same thing that I’ve been through with comic books.”

About Uncharted the producer said:
“I think Uncharted will be very successful. It’s a father and son game. There are things about it that are interesting. I think the world of antiquities theft, there are many countries in the world that realised they’re being robbed and they’re trying to recoup these important pieces,” said Arad. “Now, the script has a lot of character [and] I think that has a shot at being the first one [to succeed].”

Regarding Metal Gear Solid, Arad says it is a “Cain and Abel” story that has what it takes to make a good translation to the big screen, but unfortunately is at least three years away of getting onto the big screen.

Finally Mass Effect; “It’s a big idea, that we, humans, are the least developed, the least trusted, it’s an interesting mirror image of our world, we are the aliens now,” said Arad. Love the project, it’s getting there, it’s been a lot of work; some movies take five, six years before they’re ready.” Five or Six years?!?!?!?!?

Regardless of time, what all fans want is to have a GOOD adaptation of their beloved video games.
