The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones Comic-Con Panel Recap In 6 Steps

At the Comic-Con panel for The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones were the book author Cassandra Clare, the director Harold Zwart and actors Lily Collins, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers, Godfrey Gao and Jamie Campbell Bower.

  • After the showing of a new clip from the film, actress Lily Collins said that what appealed her about her character was her tenacity in trying to find her mom, and “she finds her own voice” independently of how difficult the situation is. She goes on by saying that she was a fan of the books before joining the cast.
  • And talking about the books, director Harold Zwart says that they didn’t really change anything, what they did do was take some shortcuts to accommodate the book’s story to a feature film time and format. The book’s author Cassandra Clare said that she was “pretty interfere-y”, she wanted to be involved in everything and anything, from the casting, to wardrobe, set designs, etc… “it was very collaborative”, she said.
  • Actor Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Jace, said that his character’s arrogance in the books and film was merely a façade that was shattered when he was around Clary; “I made him really grumpy, but he needed to be grumpy in order for you to feel for him later on in the project.”
  • Actor Kevin Zegers said that they just wanted to focus on one book, rather than compressing all the books, or grabbing pieces from this book or that book. He then goes on by saying that he does acknowledge his character sexuality, which is revealed through the book series, but wanted to focus on this book, City of Bones.

And now for the Q & A

  • An audience member asked the author, how she balanced being active in the fan community and at the same time write? Well the author replied that obligates herself to write 3000 words a day and only after that she feels free to do whatever she likes. But she did say she like engaging with the fans.
  • Another audience member asked the actors in the panel what was most challenging in playing their characters? Collins said “doing stunts in a tight dress and five inch leather boots.”; Bower said “not eating chocolate”; Sheehan said “my masculinity took a lot of hits on this film because a lot of his acting was cowering behind the women.” Zegers said “hanging out with Bowler for three months was terrible”, Zegers would sent photos of junk food to Bowler. And finally Goa said something that only fans of the book can understand, “Taking my pants off in front of Harold”
