The
casting for the upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four is well under way, with
yesterday’s report that Girls star Allison Williams was on the short list for
the role of, we presume Sue Storm, aka Invisible Woman. Well, today we heard
actor Michael B. Jordan is being considered for the role of Johnny Storm, aka
Human Torch.
Jordan
has two things going for him, the first is that he already played a super
powered man in Chronicle, the second thing is that the director of Chronicle is
Josh Trank, who directed Chronicle.
According
to The Wrap, “Jordan has had multiple meetings at Fox within the last week,”
and his “chances depend on whether or not he has chemistry with the other
actors up for the highly-anticipated movie, according to one insider.”
So
Jordan has been gaining some notoriety and is starting to pull some crowds to
the theater seats, with such
movies
as Chronicle and Fruitvale Station which was nominated for the Cannes Film
Festival and the Sundance Film Festival.
Now
the main question that is probably going through your head is that Michael B.
Jordan is black and the character he is being considered for, The Human Torch
is white. This simple fact will most certainly upset and enrage the die-hard
fans of the comic, but we are in the 21st century I’m shore we can integrate
themes like adoption, infidelity, divorce, etc.. in an established comic book
world, no? Or maybe the studio can just cast an African-American actress for
the role of Sue Storm and then all is well, who knows.
But
the opposite can also happen. The studio may decide to play it safe and cast a
white actor for the role.
Ultimately
whoever the studio decides to choose, should be based on quality and not on
race.
Josh
Trank is also rumored to be developing Venom, a spin-off of The Amazing
Spider-Man franchise. At this point not much is known about the project but we
will keep you updated for more news.
Supposedly
this is the storyline for Venom:
“Eugene
"Flash" Thompson is a troubled 19 Year old trying to find his place
in the world, like any average young adult. His life changes, however, when new
Oscorp technology escapes from the lab. The new technology has bonded to him
and is looking for destruction and rages the streets as his alter ego Venom,
but Flash knows in his heart what he is and hopes to contain the symbiote in
effort to stop the sinister spawn of the symbiote; CARNAGE.”
