Some of you may
not remember this movie, but Disney’sThe
Black Hole might be rebooted. Writer Jon Spaihts, the man behind the original Prometheus script, is
currently working on the script for the remake of the 1979 The Black Hole. His work
is going to be based on a previous draft, written by Travis Beacham, from Guillermo del Toro’s, Pacific
Rim. Linked to the project is also, the director of the upcoming Oblivion,
Joseph Kosinski(Tron: Legacy). By the
time Tron:
Legacy premiered, director Joseph
Kosinski, had to choose what is next job would be, and he had to choose
between two movies, The Black Hole or Oblivion. He chose Oblivion.
Those who were more attentive, might have seen some references to The
Black Hole in Tron: Legacy, inside the young Sam Flynn’s bedroom, there is a poster
of the film in his wall, as well as an action figure of Old B.O.B. on the shelf next to some Tron figures.
from right to left Vincent and Old B.O.B.
The Black Hole told the story of a group of space explorers, aboard the USS
Palomino, and one day while returning home to Earth from one of their trips,
they discover a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, near a black hole. Dr. Hans
Reinhardt, the commander of the USS Cygnus has planned go through the black
hole, and for that purpose e lures the crew of the USS Palomino and tries to
turn them into faceless robots so they can serve him.
Here is the
trailer for the 1979 The Black Hole:
The original
film had Maximilian Schell as the
lunatic commander of the USS Cygnus, Dr. Hans Reinhardt and the late Anthony Perkins as Dr. Alex Durant, Robert Forster as Captain Dan Holland, Joseph Bottoms as the Lieutenant
Charles Pizer, Yvette Mimieux as Dr.
Kate McCrae, the late Ernest Borgnine
as Harry Booth and Tom McLoughlin as
Captain S.T.A.R.
For those of you
that have watched the 1997 sci-fi horror movie, Event Horizon by Paul W.S. Anderson, starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely
Richardson, Richard T. Jones, Jack Noseworthy, Jason Isaacs, Sean Perwee,
Peter Marinker, Holly Chant, you can see the influence of The Black Hole.
On a separate note,
Jon Spaihts is also working on a
script for the reboot of Universal’sThe
Mummy, but apparently he has some competition in the project, from Billy Ray, whom was one of the writers
of the screenplay for The Hunger Games.
Plus+
Oblivion, the movie that director Joseph
Kosinski, choose to do instead of The Black Hole, just got a special
one sheet poster for its IMAX premiere, and with a title like “Earth Is A Memory Worth Fighting For”, I’m
already having goosebumps all over my spine. Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko and Morgan Freeman is schedule to hit
theaters on the 19th of April of 2013 on both IMAX and regular
theaters. So it’s just around the corner (can’t
wait).
