Yesterday comic book legend Carmine Infantino passed away at the age of 87. The news was announced by Vanguard Productions publisher J. David Spurlock through is facebook page.

Infantino was born in Brooklyn in 1925 and began his professional career in the comic book business by inking Frank Giacoia’s pencil drawings and Jack Frost stories in Marvel’s predecessor Timely in their USA Comics 3 in 1942.
By 1956 he became one of the most important people in the comic book world, by inspiring the Silver Age of comics, bringing back titles like The Flash, but with a re-design in both costume and origin.
In 1961 with “The Flash of Two Worlds” he introduced the concept of Earth Two, a parallel world that was the foundations for DC’s Multiverse which is still used today not only in comic books but in games, animated movies and tv shows.
In 1964 he added the yellow oval to the symbol on the chest of BatmanIn the mid 60’s he co-created the Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl for the massive tv show Batman, starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as the Robin
By 1971 he became the publisher of DC Comics, after he had risen to art director and editorial director. In the late 70’s Carmine Infantino returned to Marvel, drawing the Star Wars comics, this helped Marvel from financial collapse.

The Comic Buyer’s Guide Millennium Poll named him one of the greatest penciller of all time.

Carmine Infantino won at least 14 awards, one National Cartoonists Society Award for the best comic book in 1958, he won twelve Alley Awards for different titles and categories, including one for being the person  "who exemplifies the spirit of innovation and inventiveness in the field of comic art".
