Sony Pictures has
found in The Secret Life of Bees filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood the perfect
fit to bring the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff centered on Silver Sable and Black
Cat.
Created by Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard, Black Cat
debuted on the pages of 1979s The Amazing Spider-Man #194. The former cat
burglar counts on her enhanced strength, stamina, and sight (among other
abilities) to fight crime.
Created in 1985 by Ron Frenz and Tom DeFalco, Silver
Sable made her debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #265. The leader of the Wild
Pack, a mercenary group initially devoted to hunt Nazi war criminals, Sable was
been both an antagonist and ally to Spider-Man.
Chris Yost, who most recently worked on the upcoming
Marvel film Thor: Ragnarok, is writing a new draft. Lisa Joy, co-creator of
HBO's Westworld, also worked on the script.
Expected to go into production in the fall, the movie
will be produced by Amy Pascal and Matt Tolmach.
Silver & Black (as it is being called), is the
second offshoot of the newly rebooted Spider-Man franchise, with the first
being Venom, which is set to star Tom Hardy in the lead role and be directed by
Ruben Fleischer.
Prince-Bythewood's directorial
credits also include the 2000 drama Love and Basketball, and the 2014 romantic
drama starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker, Beyond the Lights.
The director also
co-created the Fox crime drama Shots Fired, and is set to helm the pilot for
the upcoming Marvel teen series Cloak & Dagger.
