Will Smith has entered negotiations to star in Gemini
Man, an action thriller being developed by Skydance based on an unproduced
script that has been floating around Hollywood for a the last two decades.
The film follows an aging assassin who finds himself
in a lethal fight with his clone, who happens to be 25 years younger and at the
peak of his abilities.
Ang Lee is also in talks to direct the project, which
is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
Gemini Man was first set up at Disney in 1997 with
Tony Scott ("Top Gun") set to direct after a pitch by Darren Lemke.
Always popular with executive, both in and outside of the studio, the project
was deemed unfilmable because visual effects had not yet caught up with the
film's demands.
Between then and now, the script for the film was
re-written several times, and a number of camera tests were conducted with such
actors as Mel Gibson and Clint Eastwood being considered for the lead role.
With the technology now able to have the same actor
play both lead roles, Skydance picked up the project in 2016, with Bruckheimer
and Don Murphy executive producing.
Smith's deal is far from locked. The actor has the Bad
Boys sequel in the pipeline, and is also in talks to play Genie in Disney's
live-action Aladdin movie.
