Is Sony's Spider-Man cinematic
universe finally taking off?
After (re)announcing Venom, the
studio is now working to develop a feature film centered on the female
characters Black Cat and Silver Sable.
Chris Yost, who co-wrote the
story for Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, was hired to pen the script for the film. He
will be working off an earlier draft written by Lisa Joy, one of the creators
of HBO's hit sci-fi series Westworld.
According to THR, the studio
is looking to meet with directors sooner rather than later. Amy Pascal and Matt
Tolmach are producing the film, which Sony expects to go into production in the
fall.
Created by Marv Wolfman and
Keith Pollard, Black Cat debuted on the pages of 1979s The Amazing Spider-Man
#194. The former cat burglar counts on her enhanced strength, stamina, and
sight (among other abilities) to fight crime.
Created in 1985 by Ron Frenz
and Tom DeFalco, Silver Sable made her debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #265. The
leader of the Wild Pack, a mercenary group initially devoted to hunt Nazi war
criminals, Sable was been both an antagonist and ally to Spider-Man.
Basic plot details for both movies
are under-wraps or non-existent at this point, however THR also reports that
neither are offshoots of the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie but rather
"projects spun from the overall franchise and based on Sony's Marvel's
Spider-Man universe."
Unlike Venom, which is set for
an October 2018 openning, no date was announced for Black Cat & Silver
Sable.
