With filming still going, Warner Bros. has decided to
share the first official images of Alicia Vikander in the Tomb Raider reboot,
where she plays the titular character.
In
the movie, "seven years after the disappearance of her father, 21-year-old
Lara has refused to take the reins of his global business empire, instead
working as a bike courier in London while taking college classes. Eventually
she becomes inspired to investigate her father’s disappearance and travels to
his last-known location: a tomb on an island somewhere off the coast of Japan."
The brief description parallels that of the recent
reboot of the game, which much more serious and grittier then previous installments.
"We drew a lot of inspiration and reference from
the game and the entire Tomb Raider canon to develop our world, and
I believe fans will recognize that," said director Roar Uthaug ("The Wave") while speaking to
GQ. "At the same time, this is
a completely different theatrical approach to Lara Croft that will offer
something new in the origin and development of the character. It’s a story that
not only highlights her incredible physical accomplishments but delves deeper
into her humanity."
From a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the
film also stars Leo Ashizawa, Walton Goggins, Dominic West, and Daniel Wu.
Tomb Raider opens in theaters on March 16, 2018.
