Will Smith has entered negotiations to join Tim
Burton's upcoming live-action remake of Dumbo.
Based on Disney's classic but racially problematic
1941 animated movie, Dumbo tells the tale of a baby circus elephant of the same
name who is made fun of for having been born with big hears and is forcefully separated
from his mother. Dumbo later learns how to use them to fly, becoming a circus
star, and reuniting with his mother.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but
sources claim that in this version of events, the circus portion of the story
will be much more developed in comparison to the original film. As a matter of
fact, the character Smith is reportedly in talks to play is a circus worker
whose children develop a relationship with Dumbo.
No official offer has yet been made, partially due to
Sony's Bad Boys sequel Bad Boys for Life, which could go into production at the
same time as Burton's Dumbo.
The last few years have been mostly misses than hits
for Smith. His two most recent projects, the superhero movie Suicide Squad and the
morally questionable and bizarre drama Collateral Beauty, were panned by most
critics, with the latter not performing particularly well at the box office.
Smith is currently starring in Bright, a sci-fi/fantasy
crime film that his Suicide Squad helmer is directing for Netflix, which also
stars Joel Edgerton, Edgar Ramirez, and Noomi Rapace.
