Carrie Fisher, the actress and writer best known to
millions across the world as Princess/General Leia in the Star Wars universe
has, sadly, passed away this Tuesday morning after having suffered a heart
attack four days earlier.
"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her
beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning."
The daughter of Hollywood royalty Debbie Reynolds
("Singin' in the Rain") and Eddie Fisher ("What's My
Line?"), Fisher paved her own way in the business both in front and behind
the camera.
As an actress, Fisher leaves behind a legacy that in
addition to Star Wars also includes roles in 30 Rock, Wonderland, When Harry
Met Sally…, Hannah and Her Sisters, and The 'Burbs to name but only a few.
As a writer, Fisher tackled her substance abuse
problems and bipolar disorder in the novel Postcards From the Edge, which she
herself adapted into a two-time Academy Award nominated film of the same name
directed by Mike Nichols and starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine. She
also penned her HBO special Wishful Drinking, as well as episodes of Roseanne,
and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.
As a script doctor, Fisher worked on such projects as
Last Action Hero, Sister Act, The Wedding Singer, and the Star Wars prequels.
Prior to her death, Fisher had wrapped Rian Johnson's
yet untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII, and had joined the cast of Vlad
Marsavin's feature film debut Wonderwell where she would star opposite Nell
Tiger Free ("Game of Thrones"), Rita Ora ("Fifty Shades of
Grey"), and Sebastian Croft ("Game of Thrones").
Fisher's death follows Star Wars family member Kenny
Baker, who played the resourceful and feisty astromech R2-D2, and who passed
away this August at age 81 in England.
Our thoughts go out to Fisher's mother, her daughter
Billie Lourd, her brother Todd Fisher, and her half-sisters Joely Fisher and
Tricia Leigh Fisher.
