Focus Features has released a featurette for J.A. Bayona's fantasy drama A Monster Calls detailing how the story actually originated with children's
author Siobhan Dowd, who passed away from cancer before being able to finish it,
and how Patrick Ness took the original idea and finished it.
Based on Ness' award-winning children's novel of the same name, A Monster
Calls centers on Conor (Lewis MacDougall), a 12-year-old boy who escapes into a
fantasy world of monsters and fairy tales as a way to deal with his mother's
(Felicity Jones) illness and the bullies that torment him at school.
Opening in theaters on select theaters on December 23 and wide on January 6,
the film also stars Liam Neeson, Sigourney Weaver, and Toby Kebbell.
