
Doug Jones ("Hellboy") and Anthony Rapp ("Rent") have
joined the cast of CBS' upcoming television reboot of Star Trek, Discovery.
Jones will play Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer who happens to be a
new alien species in the Star Trek universe. As for Rapp he will play Lt.
Stamets, and astromycologist, i.e. a fungus expert, who is the Starfleet
Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery.
Both actors join Michelle Yeoh who is set to play Captain Georgious, the
Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou.
According to the THR, the new
series will also feature an "openly gay actor as one of the male leads (which
Fuller confirmed), a female admiral, a male Klingon captain, a male admiral, a
male adviser and a British male doctor."
Bryan Fuller, who stepped down from
his role as showrunner, co-wrote the first hour of the show with Alex Kurtzman, while Nicholas Meyer, who has deep ties to the franchise having
written Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered Country, penned
the second hour.
Star Trek: Discovery premieres on CBS All Access on May of
2017.
