Bourne Franchise Continues But Not With Jeremy Renner

When Matt Damon decided to walk away from the Bourne franchise after Ultimatum, Jeremy Renner, who was coming from two back-to-back Oscar nominations for The Hurt Locker (2010), and The Town (2011), as well as a the mega hit Marvel's The Avengers, stepped in to take the franchise in a new direction as Aaron Cross in Bourne Legacy.

The film didn't perform as well as some might have anticipate, but it didn't tanked either, meaning a sequel was always on the horizon, until now that is.

Speaking to Yahoo! Movies, Bourne producer Frank Marshall did his best to not outright confirm that Renner's Bourne storyline has been scrapped from any plans for the franchise.

"Probably not. I don’t know," the producer replied when asked if we could see Renner's Bourne spinoff continue. "That story is still out there as well but it’s not… we’re not talking about it."

Meanwhile, Damon's return to the franchise with this year's Jason Bourne could lead to a sixth film in the franchise and fifth with him in the titular role.

"I have spoken to them both," Marshall said about reteaming with Damon and director Paul Greengrass. "Obviously they’re very pleased with how the movie turned out. It’s really about the story, just like on this one, everyone said ‘if you come to us with a good story, we’ll think about it. So right now, we’re taking a pause and then we’re going to dive back in and try to find a story. We did leave it wide open at the end of the movie to continue on in Bourne’s world so we’ll see what we can come up with."

Jason Bourne opened to average reviews, but grossed over $400M worldwide on a $120M production budget. As for Renner's Bourne Legacy it also opened to average reviews, however it grossed under $300M on a production budget of $125M.
