Jackie Earle Haley
has joined the cast of Robert Rodriguez's future big screen adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's popular Japanese manga series Alita: Battle
Angel, which James Cameron will
produce alongside his partner at Lightstorm Entertainment Jon Landau.
Set in the 26th century, in Alita: Battle Angel the people and cyborgs of the Scrapyard live
beneath the floating and ruling city of Tiphares, whose trash pours down below.
One day Doctor Dyson Ido, a former Tipharean citizen and doctor specializing in
cyborg repairs, finds the intact head of young cyborg-girl in a huge pile of
scrap. He takes her in, fixes her, and gives her a name, Alita. Still amnesiac,
but with knowledge of long forgotten fighting techniques, Alita decides to
become a bounty collector.
So far the cast of Rodriguez's Alita: Battle Angel includes Rosa Salazar
as the titular Alita, and Christoph Waltz as Ido.
Details on Haley's character are scarce, but sources say he will
play villainous cyborg, which will entail plenty of CGI and greenscreen.
Production is expected to start in the fall for a July
2018 release.
