After nearly twenty years of gathering dust on the shelf, Mel Gibson is
finally ready to bring Simon Winchester's best-selling novel The Professor and
the Madman to the big screen, where he will star opposite Sean Penn who is in
negotiations.
In the film, Gibson will play Professor James Murray, who in 1857 embarked
on the daunting journey of creating the Oxford English Dictionary, while Penn
will play Dr. W.C. Minor, an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane who
contributed with over 10,000 entries.
Gibson acquired the rights to Professor and the Madman in 1998, and though
he was initially poised to direct the drama, he has now passed on the reigns of
the project to his Apocalypto screenwriter Farhad Safinia.
Voltage Pictures, the company behind The Hurt Locker and Dallas Buyers Club
is producing the film about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary,
which is expected to be sent out to buyers at the upcoming Toronto International
Film Festival.
Production should begin in Europe sometime in October.
