While we wait for the Expendabelles to get off the
ground, another all-female spinoff of an all-male franchise is coming along.
Sources close to the production have confirmed that
Warner Bros. is close to finalizing deals with Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham
Carter, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, and Awkwafina (moniker of Asian-American hip-hop
star Nora Lum) to have the actresses join Gary Ross' female-driven Ocean's Eleven spinoff Ocean's
Eight.
The five artists join the previously announced Sandra
Bullock and Cate Blanchett in the film. But five plus two equals seven not
eight, and so Ross is on the lookout for another star to complete the cast and match
the title. Elizabeth Banks was at one point rumored to be in talks, but it is
unclear if it was for the eighth spot on the team, or if any of the above-mentioned
names have taken her place on the roster.
Olivia Milch penned the screenplay, which Steven
Soderbergh will produce alongside Susan Ekins, Jesse Ehrman, and Warner Bros.' Greg
Silverman. The screenwriter is currently in post-production on her directorial debut titled Dude,
which coincidentally also stars Awkwafina.
Based on the 1960s franchise starring Rat Pack members
Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, and Angie
Dickinson, Soderbergh's 2000s remake included George Clooney, Brad Pitt,
Bernie Mac, Elliott Gould, Casey Affleck, Scott
Caan, Shaobo Qin, Carl Reiner, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, and
Catherine Zeta-Jones.
