From and inconsequential
bump on the road to a heavy burden, The Divergent Series franchise has become an
unknown quantity for Lionsgate, which has devised yet another plan to salvage
their young-adult investment.
Last month we
reported that Lionsgate was planning to wrap-up the series with a TV movie
instead of a theater release as originally planned. The new map for the series
also included a spinoff television series featuring new storylines and
characters.
Well, plans have
apparently changed.
According to
Deadline, Lionsgate will now finish the film series not with a TV movie but
with a one-season TV series before expanding the post-apocalyptic universe with
a spinoff.
"The
performance of the last segment of the theatrical didn’t really create a
situation where [Lionsgate] could commit the production resources necessary to
really make the production we needed," said Television Group Chairman
Kevin Beggs before adding that he and his group are excited about "resolving the novel in a season
across 10 to 13 episodes and then expanding from there into multiple seasons."
Lionsgate will present this plan to
roughly 12 interested networks next week, and
I'm interested in seeing who is foolish enough to acquire a one-season finale
to a failed theatrical franchise that is likely to come without its core cast -
Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller and so on. Maybe Lionsgate's
recent $4.4 billion acquisition of Starz will end up being the escape the studio needs for the film series, which failed to impress fans and leave much of a dent on the
box-office.
