With the Harry Potter
prequel/spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them expected to take
theaters by storm in just a few months, Warner Bros. is moving ahead with a
sequel, which the studio had scheduled to open in theater on November 16, 2018.
The date was previously held by an Untitled WB event film.
J.K. Rowling, who made
her screenwriting debut with Fantastic Beasts, is set to write the sequel,
which director David Yates will also direct.
"We’ve seen the
script for Part 2, for the second movie, which takes the story in a whole new
direction – as you should, you don’t want to repeat yourself," said Yates.
"The second movie introduces new characters as she builds this part of the
Harry Potter universe further. It’s a very interesting development from where
we start out. The work is pouring out of
her."
In Fantastic Beasts
and Where to Find Them, Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne stars in the central role
of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, who Scamander has just
completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of
magical creatures. Arriving in 1926 New York for a stopover, Scamander finds
himself in a race to recapture some of fantastic beasts, which have escaped and
could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
The sequel is said to
be darker in tone with Scamander and other characters having to decide where
their allegiances lay.
