Sony Pictures has
given another coat of paint on Bad Boys 3 with a new title and release date.
Today, the studio announced
that they have pushed the now titled Bad Boys for Life from its June 2, 2017
release date to the much less crowded January 12, 2018. This is the third time
the project has shifted release dates. The film was originally set to be out in
theaters on February of 2017.
One explanation for
the move could have to do with Will Smith's busy schedule, since in addition to
his promotional duties on Suicide Squad, the actor will also be starring in
David Ayer's next film Bright, and is likely to go on an Oscar tour for
Collateral Beauty, a drama that is set to come out in December.
The A-Team, and The
Grey writer/director Joe Carnahan is attached to direct Smith and Martin
Lawrence's long-gestating reunion.
At this point it
seems unlikely that Sony will shuffle the schedule once again just to move the
project into a more traditional summer release, since: A) Bad Boys 2 came out
13 years ago, B) It wasn't that big of a box-office hit, and C) doing so means going
up against such heavyweights as Jurassic
World 2, Toy Story 4, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and the Transformers spinoff.
On the contrary, if
they do stick with the January release, Bad Boys for Life will go up against
Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which may not even come out since production has halted,
an untitled horror film from Blumhouse, and an animation titled Sherlock
Gnomes.
