The Divergent Series Finale Switches Theaters For TV Movie & TV Spinoff

It seems Lionsgate has rethought their exit strategy for the Divergent Series franchise, which will now consist of a television movie and a spinoff series.

According to Variety the new plan is still being devised, so things might still change, but instead of having The Divergent Series: Ascendant open in theaters as originally planned, the franchise will now end on the small screen with a movie followed by a series still set in the same post-apocalyptic world but featuring new storylines and characters.

Despite the promising financial start, the franchise slowly deflated as installments went on. Divergent (2014) grossed $288M on an $85M production budget, and while it made (roughly) $10M more than the first movie, Insurgent's (2015) production budget was bumped to $110M, meaning it actually made less. As for the third movie, Allegiant (2016), that one took a tumble at the box office, grossing just $179M with an unknown (but presumably higher) budget.

At this time it is unclear if Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort and the remainder of the cast will return for the TV movie given the sudden turn in plans, but no deals have yet been struck.
