Other than Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), and Spock (Zachary
Quinto), the characters of the new Star Trek film franchise have been for the
most part one-dimensional. No growth, no change, and no internal conflict. They
are there to serve a particular function in the film's plot and that is about
it. Well that's about to change.
Speaking to the Australian newspaper The Herald Sun,
John Cho who plays Mr. Hikaru Sulu, the helmsman of the USS Enterprise in the
successfully rebooted franchise, revealed that besides being the loving father
of a small daughter, Sulu is also gay. However, and in characteristic Star Trek
fashion, don't expect a lot of fanfare around it.
"I liked the approach, which was not to make a
big thing out of it," the actor told the Australian newspaper during
the press tour for the film. "[That] is where I hope we are going as a
species, to not politicize one's personal orientations."
Sulu's gender orientation is a nod by screenwriters
Simon Pegg and Doug Jung to original Sulu actor George Takei, who was forced to
keep an integral part of his being hidden from executives and so on if he
wanted to keep working.
Opening in theaters on July 22, Star Trek Beyond also
stars the late Anton Yelchin, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, Sofia Boutella, Karl Urban,
Deep Roy, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Joe Taslim.
