Zac Efron is negotiations to join Hugh Jackman in the
upcoming P.T. Barnum musical biopic, The Greatest Showman on Earth, which The
Wolverine star will produce.
In the film Jackman will play Barnum, the real life
conman turned showman, who founded the famous Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Visual effects artist Michael Gracey will be making
his directorial debut from a script penned by the Jenny Bricks ("Sex and
the City").
Details on Efron's character are being kept under
wraps.
Phineas Taylor "P.T." Barnum was a showman
and businessman mostly remembered for promoting hoaxes, "human curiosities"
and various other oddities besides the more traditional circus acts such as
acrobats and animals. Among the variety of curiosities Barnum advertised were General
Tom Thumb (a 3.35ft person), Anna Swan (a 7.11ft woman), Jumbo the largest Elephant,
the Feejee Mermaid, Eng and Chang the Siamese Twins, or William Henry Johnson,
a.k.a. Zip the Pinhead an African-American who suffered from microcephaly and
who Barnum taught a made-up language to speak during the shows.
