With Deadpool proving
to 20th Century Fox that an R-rated superhero franchise can be financially
viable, the studio seems to be looking at other properties, specifically X-Force,
as their next R-rated franchise set in the world of the X-Men.
Speaking to Den of
Geek, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg revealed that they will go down the R-rated
path only when absolutely needed, and X-Force seems to qualify.
"When there are films that want to be raunchier,
want to be darker, want to be violent or R-rated, [Fox will] be open to it,"
Kinberg said. "And not every movie should be. I don't think that the
main X-Men movies should be R-rated; I don't think they're R-rated stories. But
if we were to make an X-Force movie,
that probably should be R-rated."
X-Force is an offshoot of the X-Men centering on a team
of mutants led by Cable and that over the years included such superheroes as
Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Archangel, Psylocke, and others. Cable will make
his debut in Deadpool 2.
The producer and screenwriter also clarified that the upcoming Wolverine
sequel starring Hugh Jackman was already R well before Deadpool had came out.
"And what we're doing with the Wolverine movie...
that wasn't impacted by Deadpool. We'd made
the decision for Wolverine to be R-rated before Deadpool came
out. But I think there's even more confidence about having made that decision
now that you see that an R-rated Deadpool movie
can do better than any X-Men movie's ever done."
A few years ago Kick-Ass 2
director Jeff Wadlow announced he was working on an X-Force movie for Fox, but
that project seemingly fell through.
Written by David James Kelly
from a treatment by James Mangold, and produced
by Lauren Shuler Donner and Hutch Parker, Wolverine 3 opens in theaters on
March 3, 2017.
