Bryan
Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse comes out next week in the U.S., and just as the
installments that preceded it (The Last Stand, Days of Future Past), it too
will have a post-credit scene. The little of what is to come wasn't attached to
early screenings of the movie, but now that it has been released elsewhere in the
world, reports are coming in detailing what it features.
Spoilers
ahead!
According
to Screen Crush, the 90-second scene takes place at Colonel William Stryker's
Weapon X program base, which at this point is in ruins. A man in a suit can be
seen approaching a wall with X-rays of Wolverine, pulling one down, and then
taking a vial of blood labeled Weapon X from a nearby refrigerator and placing
it inside his briefcase along with several other colored vials. In a close-up
shot, this mysterious figure closes the briefcase, which has the logo of one
Essex Corporation.
X-Men
or comic book fans in general may already know what Essex Corporation alludes
to, but for those that don't, in the comics Nathanial Essex, a.k.a. Mr.
Sinister is a 19th Century scientist that was genetically mutated by
Apocalypse. Armed with a plethora of abilities including immortality, shape
shifting, and telepathy, Mr. Sinister used his accumulated wealth to fund his demented
and obsessive experiments on mutants in general, and in Scott Summers, a.k.a. Cyclops
in particular.
It
is unclear if the post-credit scene is a little teaser for the next installment
in the main X-Men franchise, which will take place in the '90s, or one of the
spinoffs that are coming our way such as Gambit, New Mutants, X-Force or even
The Wolverine 3, which probably makes the most sense if we take into account Mr.
Sinister's proclivity to "work" on mutants and the rumors that the
third and final Wolverine standalone movie starring Hugh Jackman will include
the debut of X-23, a female clone of Wolverine.
