Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko has joined Star Wars star Adam Driver and Monty
Python member Michael Palin in Terry Gilliam's long-long-gestating Don Quixote project.
The filmmaker was in Cannes to discuss the film and thanked Star Wars for giving
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote a new lease on life after seven unsuccessful tries
at bringing the film to the big screen.
"It's a funny thing along the way there have been
so many version of this story in my mind and it changes with each cast,"
he said. "Finally we have the perfect cast. Driver is the guy I've been
looking for all these years. Thank god for Star
Wars, Adam
Driver is bankable!"
Driver will play an advertising executive who Palin's
Don Quixote believes is Sancho Panza.
Loosely based on Miguel Crevante's 1605 novel, Gilliam
has been trying to get The Man Who Killed Don Quixote
off the ground since 1998 with several actors attached to star including Ewan McGregor, Robert Duvall, Jack O'Connell, John Hurt, Johnny Depp, whom the
director thinks could make an appearance.
Portuguese producer Paulo
Branco will produce the film under his Paris-based Alfama Films label,
alongside Spain's Tornasol Films, and Leopardo Filmes, another Portuguese
company.
The budget has been set at
$18.25 million or €16 million, and
production should begin in September in Spain and Portugal.
Branco's Alfama Films
previously produced David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, and Mathieu Amalric's The
Blue Room.
